Carmenère

This grape variety is originally from Bordeaux. There are very few Carmenère vines left in Bordeaux, as it has very low yields and suffers from poor fruit set, but it is gradually experiencing a comeback. In Chile, Carmenère was often confused with Merlot but it has now become one of the key varieties in the Chilean vineyards. Carmenère is vigorous but low-yielding. It is also susceptible to poor fruit set, but relatively resistant to disease. Carmenère wines are very deep-colored and tannic with low acidity. When the grapes are really ripe, Carmenère wines develop spicy, peppery aromas.
