This
grape variety originates from the Rhône Valley. It is still cultivated
in that part of France, as well as in small quantities in Switzerland
and Australia. This grape variety is very vigorous and highly prolific.
It is preferably pruned short and needs to be grown in poor soils to restrict
yields for high quality wine production. Marsanne is susceptible to powdery
mildew, gray rot, and mites. Its long canes are also prone to wind damage.
Marsanne does best in cool locations as it is not very drought-resistant.
Bunches are large, with small grapes. Marsanne usually produces fine dry
white and sparkling wines with subtle aromas. These wines are sometimes
a little low in acidity. |
