Négrette originated in southwest France. This is still the only area where significant quantities are grown. This grape variety is fertile with late bud-break and needs to be pruned short. Négrette often suffers from poor fruit set or shot berries, depending on the vineyard soil. It is also susceptible to gray rot, powdery mildew, leafhoppers, and mites. It has small bunches and grapes. Négrette wines are deep-colored and very aromatic. They may lack freshness due to low acidity and are generally best when young. It is a very useful blending grape. |
