This grape variety originally came from the
French Pyrenees and is cultivated in the Jurançon and Pacherenc
du Vic-Bihl appellations. It has also been introduced to Uruguay. Petit
Manseng is vigorous with a growing season four weeks longer than that
of Chasselas. It is low-yielding and susceptible to powdery and downy
mildew. Both bunches and grapes are small. It is very resistant to gray
rot and develops Botrytis when ripe, producing superb quality wines with
very high sugar and acidity levels. Semi-sweet and sweet white Petit Manseng
wines are characterful and very rich. |
