This grape variety originated in southwest France. It is mainly grown inthe Bordeaux area, where it traditionally represents 5 - 10% of the blend. There are a few vineyards in California, Spain, Argentina, Chile, and Australia. Petit Verdot is vigorous with relatively long canes It is generally disease-resistant. It is a late-ripening variety - about 4 weeks after Chasselas. The bunches are middle-sized, with small grapes. Petit Verdot develops high sugar and acidity levels, giving deep-colored, powerful, tannic, lively wines. It adds liveliness, freshness, and spicy overtones to a blend. |
