This grape variety is originally from the Rhine Valley. Riesling, grown in Alsace in France, is a truly international grape variety, often confused with the lower quality Riesling Italico, or even other grape varieties. Riesling wines are made in Germany, Luxembourg, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Rumania, and Russia. Riesling is also widely grown in California, Canada, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. It is relatively resistant to winter cold but susceptible to gray rot. As it is a late-ripening variety, it is advisable to plant Riesling on hillsides with good sun exposure and poor soils. It has small bunches and grapes. Riesling wines are lively, aromatic, and elegant. They develop aromas reminiscent of fresh grass and citrus, or highly characteristic "petrol aromas". Riesling is also capable of producing great botrytized sweet white wines.
