This grape variety is mainly cultivated in its region of origin, the Rhône Valley in France. There are also a few vineyards in Italy. Roussanne has late bud-break and ripens late as well. This grape variety produces very long canes that require very careful trellis management. It is susceptible to powdery mildew and gray rot. Roussanne has small bunches and grapes. Yields may be low and irregular from one year to the next but, in vineyards with good sun exposure, Roussanne is capable of producing magnificent wines with a rich palette of floral (hawthorn, honeysuckle), fruit (apricot, peach) , and even empyreumatic (coffee) aromas. These wines are very well-balanced with good aging potential.
