This grape variety originates from the Bordeaux area. Sémillon, affected by Botrytis Cinerea, is the major grape in blends for AOC Sauternes. It is also grown in the world's main vineyard areas, particularly Chile, Argentina, United States, Uruguay, Brazil, South Africa, and Australia. Sémillon is relatively vigorous and may overcrop in rich soil, leading to a considerable loss of quality. This variety is susceptible to gray and black rot. It has medium-sized bunches with large grapes. It also makes exceptionally high-quality dry wines under optimum production conditions, especially when it is fermented and aged in oak barrels. Sémillon wines are a lovely yellow color, soft and full-bodied, with nutty and tropical fruit aromas. Outstanding quality sweet wines are also made with Sémillon.
