Tannat is originally from the French Pyrenees vineyards. It is the emblematic grape variety of Madiran wines. It is also widely grown in Uruguay and, to a lesser extent, in Argentina. Tannat is a very vigorous grape variety, so it is usually pruned long and trained on a trellis. It is susceptible to leafhoppers, mites, and gray rot. Tannat wines are deep-colored, powerful, and very tannic with characteristic raspberry aromas. They are sometimes even a little tough and astringent when young and need aging. Tannat is usually blended with other varieties.
