This grape variety originates from the northern Côtes du Rhône. Viognier is grown in the Côtes du Rhône, where it is one of the few white varieties blended with a red-wine variety, Syrah, e.g. AOC Côte Rôtie. Viognier became very popular internationally in the late 1990s, with new vineyards in California, Argentina, Chile, and Australia. It is also grown in countries on the southern shores of the Mediterranean, like Morocco and Lebanon. This grape variety may develop exceptionally long canes, which makes it susceptible to wind damage, especially as it is pruned long. It is relatively disease-resistant. Viognier produces rich, complex wines with low acidity and a lovely, golden-yellow color, featuring peach, apricot, and honey aromas, as well as floral overtones. It is also used in semi-sweet and sparkling wines. |
